Materials and Finishes

A drive is only as reliable as the surface doing the work. The right material carries the load. The right finish survives the environment. Get both right and your equipment runs longer between shutdowns, with less unplanned cost.

We custom manufacture to suit your industry, your duty cycle and your site conditions.

What it is
A chemical conversion finish, not a plating. The steel surface converts to black iron oxide around 1 to 2 microns thick.

In your drive
Adds no measurable thickness, so bores, keyways, tooth profiles and threads stay inside tolerance. Cuts glare and gives a clean industrial finish.

Best for
Indoor sprockets, taper bushes, fasteners, jigs and tooling in dry plant.

Keep in mind
Corrosion protection is light and relies on the oil or wax film. Re-oil after cleaning.

What it is
Electroplated zinc, usually 5 to 25 microns, sealed with a clear, blue or yellow passivate.

In your drive
The zinc corrodes first and protects the steel underneath. Coating thickness stays low, so threads and fits assemble without rework.

Best for
Indoor and sheltered equipment, fasteners, chain guards and drive hardware.

Keep in mind
Not built for coastal or washdown duty. High tensile fasteners at grade 10.9 and above need baking after plating to remove hydrogen embrittlement risk.

What it is
Hot dip galvanising. Steel is dipped in molten zinc near 450 degrees and zinc iron alloy layers bond metallurgically to the surface, typically 45 to 85 microns to AS/NZS 4680.

In your drive
Heavy duty outdoor protection with 20 plus years of service in most Australian conditions. Shrugs off rain, dust, UV and knocks.

Best for
Conveyor frames, guards, take up assemblies and large fabricated sprockets in agriculture, quarrying, mining and coastal plant.

Keep in mind
The coating is thick and slightly rough. Internal threads are tapped oversize and running surfaces are machined after dipping.

What it is
Iron alloyed with carbon. Low carbon for forming and welding. Medium carbon such as 1045 for strength. High carbon for wear parts.

In your drive
The default for sprockets, gears, shafts, keys and couplings. Medium carbon takes induction hardening on the tooth flanks, so teeth resist chain roller wear while the hub stays tough enough for keyways and shock loads.

Best for
General industrial drives where strength per dollar leads the decision.

Keep in mind
Bare carbon steel rusts. Pair with black oxide, zinc plating or galvanising to match the environment.

What it is
Steel with a minimum 10.5 percent chromium. A self healing chromium oxide film blocks corrosion.

In your drive
Removes coatings from the product zone. Grade 304 covers general corrosion. Grade 316 adds molybdenum for chlorides, brine, marine air and chemical exposure. Grades 410 and 420 harden by heat treatment where teeth or bearing surfaces need wear resistance.

Best for
Food, beverage, dairy, meat, pharmaceutical, water treatment and marine applications with daily washdown or caustic cleaning.

Keep in mind
Higher material and machining cost. Threads gall without anti seize. Austenitic grades wear faster than hardened carbon steel, so match the grade to the duty.

What it is
UHMWPE, cast nylon, acetal and PTFE.

In your drive
Light, quiet and self lubricating. Idler sprockets, chain guides and wear strips run dry, so no grease enters the product zone and the mating chain wears less. A plastic sprocket weighs a fraction of steel, easing start up loads on small drives.

Best for
Food and packaging lines, washdown areas, light duty conveyors and noise sensitive sites.

Keep in mind
Lower load and temperature limits. Nylon absorbs moisture and grows slightly. Thermal expansion runs several times steel, so allow for movement in fits and shaft centres.

What it is
Grey iron with flake graphite, or ductile (SG) iron with nodular graphite at 400 to 700 MPa tensile strength.

In your drive
Damps vibration and noise, machines cleanly and delivers large or complex shapes at sensible cost. Ductile iron adds toughness for shock loads and reversing duty.

Best for
Large sprockets, split sprockets, pulleys and sheaves, taper bush hubs, gearbox housings and machine bases.

Keep in mind
Grey iron is brittle under impact. Specify ductile iron for shock loading, high torque or safety critical parts.

Bronze bushes, hardened tool steels, aluminium, Dacromet and specialised coatings. If your application needs a specific material or standard, we source, machine and certify to suit.

How Material Choice Flows Through the Drive

Sprockets and gears
Tooth hardness sets wear life. Hub material sets shock resistance. Hardened teeth on a tough hub give both.

Chain and sprocket pairing
Match the chain to the sprocket. Mixing metals in a wet environment invites galvanic corrosion at the tooth contact.

Shafts, keys and couplings
Fatigue life comes from the base steel, not the coating. Specify the material first, then protect it.

Pulleys and sheaves
Mass and damping matter more than surface hardness. Cast iron earns its place here.

Bushes and locking devices
The finish decides whether the part releases cleanly in five years. Rust welds a bush to a shaft.

Guards, frames and take up units
Environment is the whole decision. Galvanising outdoors, zinc or paint indoors.
